Accessibility statement

The Ron Grimley Undergraduate Centre (RGUC) is committed to providing a Digital Asset Library (DAL) that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology or ability.

We are actively working to increase the accessibility without compromising the usability of the DAL. In doing so, we aim to conform to the Worldwide Web Consortiums (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and we are committed to maintaining this standard once it is achieved.

These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for all users and offers help and alternative solutions available to those who need it. We understand that by conforming to these guidelines we will help make the web more user friendly to all users.

Accessibility and usability features of the DAL include;

  • Ability to change the size of the text on each page.
  • CSS stylesheets provide a separate style from content so that the same content is available to ALL viewers regardless of how the content is accessed across the web.
  • The ability for users to skip to content, menu and top of page links to help screen readers access content quickly.
  • Provides users with a colour coded and clear logical navigation to enhance user experience.
  • A full sitemap is available so users can find content quickly.
  • All HTML and CSS code is fully standards compliant and is regularly checked by the W3C CSS and HTML validators. This ensures compatibility across many browsers and screen readers.
  • Making regular accessibility checks throughout the DAL's design and development stages and consistently making further checks to ensure this accessibility is maintained.

You can change the way the DAL looks

If you are having trouble reading the content on the DAL you can change the way it looks. To find out more about the standards we work to please read our accessibility statement. The settings available differ from browser to browser, but most browsers offer some or all of the following:

  • Changing font sizes
  • Other text and colour changes
  • Using a plain layout
  • Changing the font style
  • Keyboard Access
  • Access Keys

Video content

Whilst RGUC strive to adhere to the accepted guidelines and standards for accessibility, it is not always possible to do so in all areas of the DAL. At present, our video content does not incorporate assistive text overlays for hearing impaired users. We are currently striving to ensure that the site incorporates downloadable PDF transcriptions of any video and audio content that is made available. This feature will be made available to our users soon.

Changing font sizes

You are able to change the size of the font so the text is more comfortable for you to read. You can do this from options available in your web browser. Some of the most commonly used web browsers can be changed by following these instructions:

Internet Explorer (version 6 and later)
  • Click on the View menu
  • Select Text Size
  • Choose the size of text you would like
Firefox (version 2.9 and later)
  • Click on the View menu
  • Select Zoom
  • You can then zoom in or zoom out on the text to change the size
  • Alternatively, use 'Ctrl +' and 'Ctrl -' to increase and decrease the text size.
Google Chrome (version 12 and later)
  • Click the tool icon in the top right-hand corner
  • Select Options
  • Select Under the hood on the left-hand side
  • In the Web content section you can adjust the font size and style

Other text and colour changes

Some browsers allow you to change the default font and background colours you use. These settings are usually found in the 'Options' or 'Preferences' menus.

Changing background colours

Web browsers can be changed so website information is displayed in a way that it is easy for you to read. The two most commonly used web browsers can be updated in the following way:

Internet Explorer (version 6 and later)
  • Click on the Tools menu
  • Select Internet Options menu
  • Choose the Accessibility button (in the General tab)
  • Select the Ignore colours specified on webpages box
  • Click OK
  • Click on the Colours option
  • Uncheck Use Windows colours box
  • Select the text and background colours that you wish to use
  • Click OK
  • Click OK again to close the options screen
Firefox (version 2.9 and later)
  • Go to the Tools menu bar and select Options menu (make sure that you are in the content section)
  • Go to the Fonts & Colours section
  • Click on the Advanced button
  • Untick the Allow pages to choose their own colours, instead of my selections above box and click OK
  • Click on the Colours button
  • Select the colours you wish to choose for your text and background
  • Click OK
  • Click OK again exit the options menu

Using a plain layout

Many browsers allow you to strip a web page of all layout and styling by turning off the website 'style sheets'. If your browser supports this setting you will most likely find it in the 'View' menu.

Changing the font style

You can alter the style of text that is shown on your page so it's easier for you to read. The most commonly used web browsers can be updated in the following way:

Internet Explorer (version 6 and later)
  • Click on the Tools menu
  • Select Internet Options menu
  • Choose the Accessibility button (in the General tab)
